Book Rainbow started as concept during the global Corona virus pandemic. As a lover of books, the restrictions imposed by the virus meant doing without one of my favorite activities: visting bookstores. I missed the smells, the atmosphere, the little couches and coffee tables, but what I missed the most was the feeling of intensive curiosity and excitement that came with stumbling upon my next book. I missed this so much that I started thinking about ways I could re-create these moments, but online. The end result was Book Rainbow.
I believe browsing books on Book Rainbow is a memorable and unique experience. Using a simple but roughly structured system of colors, users can broadly filter a randomly generated list of books according to the categories that are relevant to them. This allows one to "stumble upon" books via a randomized yet lightly structured format.
I'm proud of the simplicity of the website and the ease at which a user can see hundreds of titles at once. From a design perspective, it may feel underwhelming or simple, but this simplicity was planned. Google inspired me to make Book Rainbow a simple but powerful website, both to conserve computational resources (energy) and to attempt to make the browsing experience easy regardless of Internet quality.
Sure, the Corona pandemic is officially over but the hunt for new and inspiring books never stops. Initially, Book Rainbow was built to fulfill a feeling, one that I wanted to share with others. Ultimately though, Book Rainbow was always about promoting reading. So take a leap into the rainbow and create your next reading adventure.
